You’ve made the decision.
You’ve felt the pull toward a life that’s calmer, clearer, and more aligned.

Maybe you’ve quit before — and found yourself back at square one after a stressful week, a family birthday, or a camping trip.

Why We Always Go Back (Even When We Know Better)

Alcohol is everywhere — it’s how we connect, how we cope, how we celebrate, and how we escape the harsh truth and reality sometimes.


We drink to unwind, to manage the chaos, to feel included, to numb what we can’t deal with.

So when you take alcohol off the table — even for a little while — your brain starts going “That's not viable.. What are you going to do when _____ happens?”

Let’s name the big ones:

  • Celebrations & holidays

  • Family tension/conflicts

  • Stress and overwhelm

  • Loneliness or boredom

  • Camping trips, birthdays, Christmas, and rituals that used to revolve around drinking

The temptation isn’t even always about the drink itself — it’s what the drink represents!!

Comfort. Belonging. Release.

But here’s the thing: Alcohol doesn’t fix things. And it doesn't make things better, or more fun. It just numbs your brain.

It is a poison.

And usually makes problems worse later, and can also tint a great event (oh the parties, weddings, camping trips I remember nothing of...)

What Alcohol Actually Solves (And What It Creates)

You already know alcohol isn’t great for you. But sometimes facts help remind you why you’re doing this.

Here are five of the biggest truths:

  • Alcohol increases your risk of several cancers, including breast, pancreatic, and liver cancer — even at low levels.

  • It disrupts your sleep and messes with your nervous system.

  • It lowers your ability to emotionally regulate, which is why you feel more anxious the next day.

  • It causes inflammation and weight gain, making it harder to feel good in your body.

  • It keeps you stuck in shame loops — hiding, regretting, and second-guessing yourself.

Oh, and the “safe” amount of alcohol?
Most health authorities now agree: there is no safe amount. Zero. Nada. Nothing.

Your Contingency Plan: The Thing That Will Save You

Quitting drinking isn’t about never being tempted — it’s about knowing what to do when you are.

I'm still tempted sometimes (of course I am!); I just never give in.

This is where your contingency plan comes in.

Here’s what mine looks like:

  • I always have alcohol-free drinks in the fridge — for celebrations, camping, Friday nights.

  • I still say, “I need a drink!” and then reach for my favourite non-alcoholic one.

  • I drive myself to events — not just to get home safely, but for the thrill of driving myself home after a party.

  • I leave before the vibe turns. When people start mumbling and forgetting what they were saying… I know it’s time.

  • And if I’m struggling? I breathe. I journal. I message someone I trust. I know I'm not alone on this journey.

It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being prepared.

“But I Just Want to Feel Like Myself at a Party…”

I get it.
It feels weird at first — being the only one not drinking.

And honestly? Sometimes it still does.


Because choosing sobriety in a world that revolves around alcohol is countercultural.

But you’re not missing out.

The first time you drive yourself home from a party, totally clear and confident — you’ll know.


The first time you wake up without a hangover and go to the beach instead — you’ll feel it.


And when you remember what drinking used to cost you (mentally, emotionally, financially)… it’ll click.

What Made It Stick For Me

There’s a moment I always come back to.

My daughter was four.
She asked for a sip of my drink, and I said yes — without thinking.

And then it hit me:
If I wouldn’t offer this to her… Why was I offering it to myself? I had become a role-model.

Sobriety isn’t about giving something up. It’s about creating a life that feels too good to numb.
